I bought myself a TI-89 Titanium yesterday, partly because I'll need it next year and partly because of all the new gaming opportunities. The first thing I did when I got it home, of course, is find out how to get games on it. Learning how to use it can come later.

After many hours of trial, error, and forums (including this one), I successfully loaded and played Tanks. Much to my dismay, the game was sparse and painfully slow, to the point I would never be able to have fun playing it. Maybe it was because I hadn't installed hw3patch then.

Looking around for something good, I came across Doom89. Being an avid gamer, this was obviously something I was going to have to have on my calculator. After some more troubleshooting, mainly deleting some apps I'd never use, I got it loaded and could play it. It really blew away all my expectations. Smooth gameplay, amazing graphics (for a calculator, that is), strafing, intelligent monsters, it seemed like this game had it all.

I had a lot of fun messing around with it for a couple mins, killed a bunch of guys, saved my game, loaded it, then shut it off in anticipation of whipping it out the next day during school and showing it off. Arbitrarily I decided to take it out again and see if I could just finish the first level, and here's where my problem is.

I ran the program again, it displayed the credits, got to where the menu would normally appear, flashed, then exited back to Home. At the bottom is displayed "ERROR: out of memory". I cleared the RAM, twice, deleted a couple more apps just in case that was the problem, but can't get it to work. All that's on it is Doom89 and some of the preloaded apps. I haven't, however, reinstalled the game, so I'm hoping that isn't the problem.

Sorry for the long post for a potentially simple problem.
Sounds like a bug...resetting all of the memory, installing hw3patch, and putting back the necessary files for Doom89 should fix it.

The person who made Doom89 is actually a member of TICALCS - maybe he'll be able to help you more.
You could try posting it on tifreakware.net, ATG (the maker) checks there more often, and there is a special thread for bug reports.

Also, how much RAM and Archive do you have?
Well, like I thought, it was a simple problem. All I had to do was reset the calculator in order to actually reset the RAM. Problem was that although I had cleared the RAM, it doesn't actually get reset unless it loses power and all the cells lose any charge. I found out how to reset the calc from the manual, [<][>][2nd] + [ON], so that's easier than removing both the batteries and backup battery. All my RAM was made availible and I was able to start up Doom successfully.

Since I've been playing I haven't had the memory error but now I'm getting an error when trying to save the game. It doesn't happen all the time but sometimes when I try to save, it freezes at the menu and I have to reset the calc to get out of it. When I do this it deletes my Doomsave file and sometimes my Doommaps file too, which makes sense, but they are archived. I didn't get this error before installing anything else on my calculator, so I'm thinking either a side-effect of resetting the calc or a compatability issue with something else if the bug hasn't been fixed.
This was a nasty bug that kept showing up for a while, but I have since fixed it. I'm ATG by the way, the author of the game. You can download the newest version (2.02) from my project website. http://www.tifreakware.net/atg under Doom89. A link to the latest binaries and source will be on the left. Be sure to check out my newest game if you like Doom89, it's going to be even better and more detailed. I'm really glad you enjoyed Doom89 Smile
